Hi All,

Really happy to see that other folks are taking EXE development seriously! I’ve been developing with it using it for starting with One Laptop Per Child in Afghanistan, I’ve created a bunch of new HTML5 idevices (including Hangman, memory match, sort items, place objects on a map, click/find) see https://sourceforge.net/p/exe-nextgen/ . I also made an export Engine to basic XML system that works with exporting to basic feature phones so that content curated with EXE can reach the most underserved learners in the world (see http://www.ustadmobile.com)

One problem with this version: Language. Sorry, but for an open source project to have global participation, but the source code comments and technical discussion need to be in English! User support in local languages and developing communities is great, but a registration form that defaults to Spanish?

I’d really much rather try and bring versions together than having two forks living out in the wild… In order to do that I would need the development conversations to be in English, and we’d want to be able to bring all the new functionality that we put together for EXE (idevices, export formats, etc) into one version of EXE.

First of all, welcome to the project, Mike. You are very right, we need to make the project really international, and the common language is English these days.

A little history will explain things. Our “fork” was born as a Spanish-only rebirth of the initial application. Comments and even source UI strings were written in Spanish in our first developments. But the localization task was always present, you may know that Spanish is not the only language in Spain. When we came to the conclusion that our version of exelearning.net was the best available, we also thought that there should be one unified exelearning project. I assure you that we have come a long way towards having this idea put into practice. The stray strings were translated into English, we sought translators into Italian, French, German, Dutch, Chinese… You may have noticed that we try to write our bug tickets and git pushes in English http://forja.cenatic.es/scm/browser.php?group_id=197.

What’s left to do? We really need developers that don’t speak Spanish. In a discussion, it’s unnatural to write in English when al lthe developers are Spanish natives. Just one foreigner makes the difference. The SCORM developments are being discussed in English because some German people are taking part. Maybe this forum can continue mainly in Spanish, in a way it is for non-technical people, for our end users, but I agree with you that the development site, http://forja.cenatic.es/projects/iteexe, should be in English or at least bilingual.

I’m not a developer myself, just the coordinator of the translation teams. I’m sure we will take a look at your developments and are looking forward to merge them with ours. Glad to hear from you.

Hi Mike:

Thank you very much for your words. Indeed, we need to present the English and so our efforts are oriented with the new additions to the project exelearning.net in the forging.

If it’s okay, you incorporate the developer mailing list to keep up and try to join forces. I see initially evolving our strategies are on the same line.

Right now I’m in Santander and I can not install your version and I do not use windows and my OS is ubuntu on i386 but tomorrow morning I try to view your promising developments.

Thanks for the quick reply. Good to hear from you and really looking forward to hopefully having one great version of EXE to rule them all… What is now coming by default in Spanish and stays in Spanish even after I click English (it is possible to update the site so that it can detect the langauge setting of the user’s computer from the user’s browser settings) is:

The features of EXE Learning are not available in English ( https://exelearning.net/features/#tab1 ) – I’d be happy to write that in English or provide a text that we’ve already made

The login page

I would suggest that there should be user support topics for each major language that EXE is used in (e.g. Users-English, Users-Spanish, Users-German, etc) and then for developer’s topics only English as far as possible. When I’m googling trying to solve a bug the fact that the developers forum posts are almost all in Spanish certainly makes life far far more difficult. That decision has to be taken at a community level.

I did notice that a lot more of the developer’s activity was happening in English; but this is again something that I see the community needs to make a decision together that if we want to have one great global exelearning community bringing features together we need to do the development work in English and have the content localizable so that quality education content can be made available in a variety of languages.

Also; I don’t know who this would exactly be addressed to; but given our code contribution would be a very large chunk of code developed over years I’d request that our company logo goes on the exelearning.net and we’re included in the credits. Everything we’ve done with EXE is of course published and is GPL.

Hi Antonio,

Thanks for your message! When you saw incporporate a developer’s email list – do you mean create one or join an existing one? The only list I saw on the intef SCM site was for cvs commits.
