The eXeLearning project announces the availability of version 4.0.1, an update that significantly expands the tool’s capabilities with the addition of new iDevices, improvements in content editing and export, security enhancements, and numerous fixes aimed at improving the user experience.
Following the release of the stable version 4.0.0, this new update continues to drive the evolution of the 4.x series, incorporating new features requested by the educational community and strengthening the creation of interactive, accessible digital resources adapted to different learning contexts.
New iDevices to enrich educational content
The main novelty of eXeLearning 4.0.1 is the addition of several iDevices that expand the possibilities for creating interactive educational resources.
Among them, the new Adaptive Quiz iDevice stands out, allowing the creation of adaptive assessment activities with SCORM tracking and integration of artificial intelligence tools for question generation.
The update also introduces the new Markdown Text iDevice, which facilitates content editing using advanced Markdown and support for mathematical expressions through LaTeX.
New specialized iDevices have also been added for different educational fields:
- 3D Viewer for the interactive visualization of three-dimensional models.
- 3DMol for the interactive representation of molecular structures.
- Electrical and Electronic Circuits.
- LOMLOE Curriculum Specification.
- 360º Panorama Viewer with support for multi-room virtual tours.
- Slide Presentation (Slide), designed for creating interactive presentations within eXeLearning projects.
Improvements in content editing and creation
Version 4.0.1 introduces new tools aimed at facilitating the daily work of authors and educators.
Code highlighting significantly expands the number of supported languages, incorporating support for technologies such as Arduino, Bash, Docker, Git, Markdown, Mermaid, PowerShell, TypeScript, and other languages widely used in educational and technical contexts.
In addition, the preview panel includes a selector that allows switching between mobile and desktop views, making it easier to check content adaptation across different devices.
Improved project management
The new version simplifies file and project management through new workflow options.
Among the improvements introduced are:
- Opening .elp, .elpx, and .zip projects via drag and drop.
- A new advanced mode for working with ELPX projects as uncompressed directories.
- Selection of a screenshot or representative image from the project properties.
- The ability to define a personal default style for new projects.
- Support for style updates from the administration panel.
More efficient and optimized export
The update includes several improvements to content export and publishing processes.
The size of generated packages has been reduced thanks to the optimization of graphic resources included in exports. Problems related to duplicated resources, missing resource directories, and the generation of licenses and footers in different export formats have also been corrected.
Specific improvements have also been introduced for exporting packages intended for Moodle platforms and other learning environments.
Security, accessibility, and fixes
Version 4.0.1 includes significant security improvements, including enhancements to ZIP file extraction processes, user authentication, and API-based access control.
In addition, multiple issues detected in different iDevices and visual styles have been resolved. These include improvements to crossword display on mobile devices, the rendering of LaTeX expressions in interactive activities, the operation of quick questions, and various adjustments to the Flux and Nova styles.
Technology updates
As part of the project’s ongoing modernization process, several technological dependencies have been updated, including Electron, PrismJS, PDF.js, and other libraries that are essential to the application’s operation.
In addition, the legacy integrations for uploading to Dropbox and Google Drive have been removed, as well as support for certain obsolete Docker configurations.
An update that expands the possibilities of eXeLearning
With eXeLearning 4.0.1, the tool takes another step forward by incorporating features highly requested by the educational community, especially in areas such as adaptive assessment, 3D content visualization, presentation creation, and curriculum integration.
This version combines new authoring capabilities with improvements in stability, security, and performance, consolidating eXeLearning as one of the leading open-source tools for creating interactive digital educational resources.
